Eng. Tarek El-Molla earned a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from Cairo University in 1986.

He joined the International company Chevron where he took over several responsibilities at engineering and operations, planning and sales till he became Sales Director and Board Member in 1998. He then went on to become Managing Director for Marketing in 2008.

In 2010, he moved to work in South Africa, at the headquarters of Chevron Africa and the Middle East where he became the Regional Director for Central and South Africa, until the end of 2010. In January 2011, he joined the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation – EGPC as the Vice Chief Executive of EGPC for Foreign Trade. He took over the position of the Vice Chief Executive of EGPC for Internal Trade in addition to serving as a Deputy for Foreign Trade during August 2011 – February 2012. He was then Vice Chief Executive of EGPC for Operations in addition to his work as Deputy for Foreign Trade.

He was assigned to be the Head of the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), from 2013 to 2015.
On 19 September 2015, he was sworn in as the Minister of Petroleum & Mineral Resources.
